In 1940 when bombs started dropping on London, Colin moved to Kempston, went to Bedford Modern School, and joined the Officers Training Corps. He remembered cycling home, aged 13, in uniform with a rifle over his shoulder. Although he didn't know it at the time, his future wife Jean was at school in the same town.
